TOWN HIRES NEW PLANNING DIRECTOR/ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR

BURN BAN REINSTATED

Due to the lack of rain and the resulting dry, hazardous burning conditions, Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner has reinstituted the burning ban in Brunswick County and asked that citizens refrain from outdoor burning until further notice. The countrywide burning ban prohibits open burning within 100 feet of occupied dwellings.

This burning ban is being re-enacted with the hope of preventing large fires such as those the region has experienced in the recent days. Although this ban does not apply to recreational fires such as charcoal or propane grilling, citizens are urged to be extremely cautious with any type of outdoor fire. Citizens are also advised to be cautious when smoking outdoors, and to dispose of cigarettes in the proper manner.

The National Weather Service is not forecasting any significant rainfall over the next week. This weekend is expected to be breezy and dry, and the fire danger will remain high.

NOTICE OF IRRIGATION BAN

Because of the current water pressure problems, the North Brunswick Sanitary District is issuing a ban on lawn and shrubbery irrigation between the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Violation of this irrigation ban shall subject the violating person to the penalties provided by Article 2, Part 2, of Chapter 130A of the General Statutes of North Carolina. The District is currently working with Brunswick County to correct these problems as soon as possible. For more information, please call the North Brunswick Sanitary District at (910)371-9949.

On May 16th, 2007, the Belville Planning Board voted unanimously to re-elect Perry Davis as chairman. Scott Milligan, board member since June of 2006, was elected as vice-chairman.

DEMOLITION OF DOWNTOWN RESUMES MAY 7, 2007

The Board of Commissioners for the Town of Belville announces that the demolition and site cleanup of the remaining structures cited for removal in downtown Belville will resume Monday, May 7, 2007.

Demolition and site cleanup will be handled through Brunswick County Operations at no charge through the ACE Program. The Town of Belville would like to express its sincere gratitude for all of the great work done by the ACE Program and Brunswick County Operations.

Mayor David Long added, "The Belville Board of Commissioners believes this to be a positive move toward the beginning of revitalization in the downtown area. The town has a terrific opportunity to re-create itself. The Belville Town Board is excited about the future possibilities for Belville".

The Strategic Leadership Committee met May 11, 2006 and reviewed results of citizen input from Town Meetings held on 4/25, 4/27 and 4/29. After determining that all citizen comments and list of priorities were incorporated in the five year strategic plan, the committee decided to recommend to the Board of Commissioners at their 5/22/06 meeting that they adopt the proposed mission statement and five year strategic plan.
